Excellent entertainment every evening with live bands performing, hot food provided by the exceptional Carnegie Catering team, and a full range of beers and ciders from around the country, including our favourite local Cumbrian micro breweries.
We hope this year’s event will be bigger and better than last year, especially on the entertainment side, with two bands on each night. And the range of beverages is even more extensive than the past 5 years.
On a serious note, the Rotary Club of Workington organises this event to raise money for charities. In 2013 we raised in excess of £8,000 from the beer festival which was pooled with other money we raise and spent on local and international causes. Each year we do things like organising Christmas parties and theatre trips for OAPs, a Kids Out day for disabled children, support for Cash for Kids with CFM and CN Group, a Technology Tournament for schools, dictionaries for Primary School children, sending students, scouts, and school children on residential youth leadership courses, support for West Cumbria Carers and for the Calvert Trust. Last year we were also able to help the local Alzheimers and Stroke Associations, the Workington Foodbank, and the Cumbria Alcohol and Drug Advisory Service. We were able to help BBC Radio Cumbria's Jigsaw Childrens Hospice Appeal, and the Howard Jeffries Sports Foundation. We have pledged to gift £1,000 a year to the West Cumbria Hospice for the next five years to support a new unit providing bereavement counselling to children.
On the international front, we have donated to the Mary's Meals and Polio Plus charities, a clinic in Mali, and a floating clinic for the boat people on lake Tonle Sap in Cambodia. When the typhoon disaster occurred in the Phillipines, the good people of Workington donated over £5,000 into the collection buckets held by our members with our sister club Derwent Rotary. This money was swelled by matching grants from our Rotary District and Rotary International to provide over 50 small fishing boats to help the survivors.
None of this would be possible without the generosity of the firms who advertise in our programme and sponsor barrels of beer at the festival. A big thank you to each and every one of them who are listed on the sponsors page. Please support these businesses.
Also, a big thank you to the customers who come to the festival each year. Isn't it good to know you can have a great time and help to support others at the same time?
